Term
Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH)
Definition
Released by the pituitry glad after being synthetized in the hypothalamus. When in the blood stream ADH targets the kidneys by sending signals to reabsorb more water and to concetrate  urine, so the body can conserve water. ADH is responsible for making the distal tubules and collecting duct permeable to water.
Term
Aldosterone
Definition
A steroid that is produced in the outer section of the adrenal cortext in adrenal gland. As Na+ ions cuase a high solute concentration. It's aldosterone job to cuase nephrons to reabsorb Na+ from the distal tubule and collecting ducts. Helps to regulate blood pressure by increasing fluid levels in the body.
Term
Erythropoietin (EPO)
Definition
Hormone responsible for promoting the formation of red blood cells by the bone marrow. When the blood in the kidneys begins to become hypoxix the cells begin to produce EPO and release it into the bloodstream. EPO travels throught the blood to the red bone marrow where it stimulates hematopoietic cells to increse red blood cell production.
Term
Epinephrine (Adrenaline)
Definition
Hormone secreted by the medulla of the adrenal glands. This targets most cells in the body, the heart and blood vessels. This hormone is involved in the fight or flight response this is when someone is in danger. Epinephrie is released when a nerve impulse is sent to the adrenal gland which consits of the medulla. Medulla is what releases the epinephrie. The purpose of the epinephrine'd effects are to provide energy so the muscles can respond.
Term
Atrial Natriuretic Hormone (ANH)
Definition
Hormone produced in the heart to increase sodium excretion and decreases blood pressure. This works to lower blood pressure by the homeostatic regulation of body water, sodium, potassium and fat.
Term
Angiotensin ||
Definition
This is a pep tide hormone with an overall effecr of increasing blood pressure, body water and sodium content. As angiotensin 1 passes through the lungs and the kidenys, it is then metabolized to form angiotensin 2 by the angiotensin converting enzyme. This affect the kidenys by increasing sodium retention and altering the way the kideny filters blood which increases water reabsorption.
Term
Parathyroid Hormone (PTH)
Definition
A hormone produced by the parathyroid glands. Thsi tragets the bones, small intestines and the kidneys. Its purpose is to increase the reabsorption of calcium and phosphate fromt  he bones to the blood. For example if the blood clcium level is too low then more PTH is released.
