Whats the role of the kidney?
Definition
The kidney is an organ that plays a role in Homoestasis (constant internal enviroment). Urea denature enzymes and is toxic to the body therefore it needs to be removed.
Term
What are the fuctions of each part of the nephron?
Definition
  • Bowman's capsule ultrafiltration occurs, blood is filtered at high pressure. The blood entering is called Glomerular filtrate. Aprox 1% of the glomerular filtrate is filtered out the other 99% is reabsorbed.
  • In the first coil tubule useful molecules plus most of water are selectively reabsorbed into the blood.
  • Loop of Henle alters salt concentrations in the medulla to aid reabsorptions in the medulla to help reabsorption of water from the collecting ducts.
  • Collecting duct water is reabsorbed. ADH is responsible for how much water is reabsorbed (osmo regulation). The hypothalmus in the brain detects when water leves in the body are high or low.
Term
How does the pitutary gland responds when secreting ADH?
Definition
  • When water levels are too low blood is more concentrated.
  • Hypothalmus is stimulated and the pitutary gland increases the amount of ADH released.
  • Collecting duct membrane becomes more permeable so water is reabsorbed into blood.
  • Urine is more concentrated.
