Definition

Was the national constitution that governed the Republic of Mexico.  It called for a president and vice president, each serving a four year term.

  • Congress had 2 houses and the power to interpret the constitution.
  • A Supreme Court and its lower courts took care of legal matters.
  • Each Mexican state, including Texas, ran its own executive, judicial, and legislative affairs.
  • Local laws had to agree with national law, but states were very independent.
  • Catholic faith was the official religion of Mexico.

Was passed by the Centralists, which put power in hands of a few leaders. 

  • Nearly all empressarios contracts were canceled.
  • Slavery was outlawed. The goal was to make Texas "more Mexican."
  • Mexico placed tariffs (taxes) on goods from the U.S.
  • Mexico sent more troops to Texas (to collect taxes from new settlers and to stop immigration from the U.S.)
