Sleepy Lagoon Case
Definition
Criminal trial of 21 Chicano youths for the murder charges of Jose Diaz. His murder occurred in the reservoir in Southeast LA. All of the jurors were white and the case is now seen as lacking in the fundamental requirements of due process. During the trial the defendants were not allowed to sit near or communicate with their attorneys. The case is seen as the precursor to the Zoot Suit Riots.

Zoot Suit Riots
Definition
The Zoot Suit Riots were in effect of the Sleepy Lagoon Murder and it erupted in LA between white sailors and Marines stationed throughout the city and Latino youths, who were recognizable by the zoot suits they favored. It began when a group of sailors went to the local movie theater with chains and gun belts and began beating Mexican Americans. This riot was initially aimed at people wearing zoot suits but ultimately was aimed at a race.

Chief William Parker was an avowed white supremacist held responsible by LA Blacks for a police reign of terror. His department was corrupt and served in the LAPD for 15 years before going to WWII.

Son-in-Law of Otis, and after Otis' death, he emerged as the unquestioned leader of LA's fourth-generation Anglo power structure, the Times, and transforming it into the most successful newspaper at the time in the West. As a real estate investor, he was a partner in syndicates that owned and developed much of the San Fernando Valley. Chandler attempted to use his influence with the Los Angeles Police Department to ensure that Thad Brown was named the next chief of police. The Crips and Bloods were a gang revival and rivalry in LA. Crips were formed first and were mostly made up of youth 17 years of age. Bloods were formed to compete with the Crips and they used murder to show their status.

Definition
Suburbanization included separation from the metropolitan area such as commuting from there to a suburb with rows of houses uniformed houses. It is a growth of major cities and pushed by population density. It also includes increase of leisures such as Dodger Stadium and Disneyland.

Prop 13 froze property taxes that 1975 rose. It allowed houses to radically appreciate in value and allowed homes to be investments, but it set up the right and left wing split. B/c of Prop 13, schools were defunded, such as schools not being able to offer AP classes, PE, etc.

Prop 187 was designed to create a state-run citizenship screening system in order to prohibit illegal immigrants from using health care, public education, and other services. It was initially passed but was later found unconstitutional after it heated the topic of illegal immigration.

House of Un-American Activities Committee was an investigative committee in the United States House of Representatives which was meant to look into suspected cases of subversion and disloyalty to the United States government. It is often associated with McCarthy and it made major investigations in the film industry.

Communist Party of the United States of America. President Joseph McCarthy suspected thousands of Communists were infiltrating the US Gov't and the accused Communists' lives were shattered and many would found it difficult finding employment in the film and music industry.

Pachucos are Mexican American youths who developed their own subculture in Southern California. They had their own styles, such as the Zoot suits, and their own dialect of Mexican Spanish. They have often been associated with the gang culture, such as Zoot Suit Riots and Sleepy Lagoon Case.

Southern California was ground zero for Red Scare. It was the paranoia that they could easily be bombed. People began making shelters beneath their homes. Fear of nuclear war shaped American culture and at the same time more people were able to buy more than before and go to college. It also liberated women.

LA walkouts had to do with Chicano Blowouts. They were a series of protests in 1968 against unequal conditions in the LA Unified School District. Students were both concerned for their education and the death toll from the Vietnam War.

Howard Jarvis
Definition

Jarvis was an American businessman, lobbyist, and politician who spearheaded Proposition 13, the California property tax-cutting initiative passed in 1978 which slashed property taxes by 57% and initiated a national tax revolt.

Jarvis and his wife collected tens of thousands of signatures to enable Prop. 13 to appear on a statewide ballot, for which he garnered national attention.
