Six of the seven states that had seceded or withdrawn from the Union came together to form a new nation called “Confederate States of America”.
The southerners fought for the Confederacy and supported the Southern Rights and Southern Independence.
Jefferson Davis was the newly elected President of the Confederate States of America. He too called for volunteers to defend or protect the South.

b. The North manufactured about 90% of the Nation’s goods. c. The North had more farms to produce food for the Union soldiers or troops.
d. The North had about 21,000 miles of railroad track. These railroad tracks helped in transportation of people and goods.
e. Most of the Nation’s banks and wealth in the form of gold were in the North. The North therefore had a good economy.

1. The Southerners were confident of their victory as they would be fighting the war in their own territory with a passion to defend their property and way of life.
2. The Southerners were skilled hunters, horsemen, riflemen.
3. The greatest strength of the south was its military leadership. Most of America’s best military officers were Southerners who chose to fight for the Confederacy and not the Union.

3.Gettysburg- it was a major victory that destored a the flame of the Confederate army's drive to fight and let it as a spark. This battle also inspired the Gettysburg Adress delived by Lincoln (Nov. 19, 1863)

ii.In Sept. of 1862, both armies met near Sharpsburg along Antietam Creek.
iii.McClellan held off Lee but nearly 5,000 were killed 21,000 injured in the battle (more than War of 1812 and Mexican War combined).

North's preparation for the War
Definition
President Abraham Lincoln prepared for the war quickly. He called for 75,000 volunteers to come forward to preserve and protect the Union. The Northerners felt that the secession of the Southern states was a treacherous act. They felt that the Southerners had done a rebellion against the Union.

1. Most Northerners thought that the war could be won just by capturing Richmond.
2. Many volunteers from the Union came to Washington D.C. shouting, “On to Richmond”.
3. Rose Greenhow had friends who worked as officers in the government.
4. Through these friends, Rose found out when and how the volunteers from the Union planned to attack Richmond.
5. She delivered this information to the Confederate leaders by sending coded or secret messages by hiding them in the curls of a young girl.
6. One morning the Union soldiers marched out of Washington D.C. singing and cheering towards Richmond.
7. When they reached a small town called Manassas on their way, they found the Confederate soldiers waiting for them.
8. The Union troops met the Confederate troops at a creek known as “BULL RUN”.
9. The Confederate General Thomas Jackson was standing like a stone wall along with his soldiers.
10. As the Union soldiers were inexperienced, they got scared and ran away back to Washington D.C. This was a victory to the Confederates and a shocking blow (defeat) to the Union.

1. As men were getting trained in the military, their wives and mothers took their place.
2. Women worked on farms and ran businesses that were taken care by men earlier.
3. Women went to work for the first time in factories.
4. Many women found jobs as nurses, teachers, government workers.
5. Women also served the military as messengers, guides, scouts, smugglers, spies and soldiers.
6. Women volunteered to help the sick and wounded soldiers.
7. Dorothea Dix was the Nurse Director of the Union army’s nursing services.
8. She had strict rules for women working as nurses and so was called, “DRAGON DIX”.

1. Most nurses worked in military hospitals and cared for the sick and wounded soldiers.
2. CLARA BARTON was a nurse who followed the Union armies on the battlefield.
3. She took care of the wounded soldiers at the battlefield.
4. She was therefore known as, “the angel of the battlefield”.
5 Clara Barton later founded the American Red Cross.
