Yes. It is surprising because it didn't make sense to build relationships when most of the family would get sold. And they built a Catholic religion.

Definition
Violent slaves revolts were very uncommon. There was a greater population of whites; therefore blacks would be easily defeated. There were also slave patrols. A ring of a bell would mean black trouble.

Self made. Some were young and ambitious young men who married planters' daughters. Others started as lawyers & used their fees & connections to acquire plantations.

Definition
No. Small slave owners wouldn't get much. Many whites didn't own slaves and that would make them poorer. It made the 25% richer.
