After refusing to defer his aide from the draft, McCarthy charged the army with coddling communists, the army countercharged McCarthy tried to blackmail them into giving David Schine special treatment. A dramatic, televised Senate hearing ensued and 20 million viewers saw McCarthy's vicious attacks on loyalty of all those who resisted him. McCarthy failed to pass a critical media test and it lead to a dramatic slide in his approval rating.
