Leukocytes

Definition
  • Originate in the bone marrow & circulate through lymphoid tissues
  • Granulocytes (Neutro-, Eosino-, Baso- phils)
  • Agranulocytes (Lymph- & Mono- cytes)

Term

Granulocytes

Definition
  • Neuts: main pathogen-fighting cells (most) Live 4-5 days in body tissues
  • Eos: help control allergic responses & fight parasites Live 3 weeks
  • Basos: release heparin, histamine, & other inflammatory mediators Live 3-7 days
Term

Agranulocytes

Definition

Lymphs:antigen-recognition & immune response; can live many years, 3 types
B: make antibodies
T: control immune response; cell-mediated immunity
NKC: kill antigenic cells
Monos: antigen-presenting cells; live 3-7 days, make inflammatory mediators (largest)

Term

Neutropenia

Definition

↓ WBC: Neut <1500/μL
mild (1000/μL)
moderate (500-1000/μL)
severe (<500/μL)
@ Risk for gram (+) & (-) bacteria & fungi infections

Term

Mononucleosis

Definition

WBC 12,000-18,000/μL (60% lymphs)
Self-limiting B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder; Epstein Barr virus (EBV) or non-EBV link
Life-time symptom-free infection
Mainly adolescents/ young adults

Term

Neutropenia

(s/s, treatment, testing)

Definition

Symptoms (S/S)
From asymptomatic to frequent infections & fever
Usual treatment
Antibiotics
G-CSF

Term

Mononucleosis

Definition

Risk factors

Direct close contact
Etiology
Tainted saliva
Dx testing – WBC Diff, heterophil antibodies

S/S
Insidious onset, incubation 4-8 weeks
Prodrome (malaise, anorexia, chills), followed by fever, pharyngitis, lymphadenopathy
Hepato/spleno -megaly
Usual treatment
Bed rest & analgesics

Term

Lymphoma

Definition

S/S – Type & stage related
Indolent (slow-growing)
Painless lymphadenopathy
Aggressive (fast-growing)
Fever, chills, night sweat
Wt loss, pruritis
Infection susceptibility
Chest discomfort
Usual treatment
Local radiation, combination chemo

Term

Radiation, benzene & chemo expo
Genes (Down, Neurofibroma, Fanconi)
Dx testing
Blood/bone marrow
Cytogene studies
Imaging
S/S
