Term
plasma membrane
Definition
The cell's outer boundary that covers a cell's surface and acts as a barrier between the inside and the outside of a cell.  All materials enter or exit through the plasma membrane.
Term
Cytoplasm
Definition
The region of the cell that is within the plasma membrane and that includes the fluid, the cytoskeletion, and all of the organelles except the nucleus.
Term
prokaryotes
Definition
organisms that lack a membrane-bound nucleus and membrane-bound-bound organelles. And holds their genetic information in the nucleoid.
Term
eukaryotes
Definition
Organisms made up of one or more cells that have a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.
Term
Ribosomes
Definition
organelles made of protein and RNA that direct protein synthesis in the cytoplasm.
Term
Mitochondria
Definition
tiny organelles that transfer energy from organic molecules to ATP.
Term
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Definition
a system of membranous tubes and sacs that functions primarily as an intracellular highway, a path along which molecules moce from one part of the cell to another.
Term
Golgi Apparatus
Definition
a system of flattened, membranous sacs that modifies many cellular products and prepares them for export.
Term
Vesicles
Definition
small, spherically shaped sacs that are surrounded by a single membrane and that ar classidied by their contents.
Term
Cell Wall
Definition
rigid layer that lies outside the cell's plasma membrane.
Term
central vacuole
Definition
a large, fluid-filled organelle that stores not only water but also enzymes, metabolic wastes, and other materials.
Term
nucleus
Definition
houses and protects the cell's genetic information and is filled with a jallylike liquid called the nucleoplasm.
