Conditions/diseases caused by Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC)
Definition
Leading bacterial cause of diarrhea and characterized by one or more enterotoxins and presence of fimbriae used for attachment to host intestinal cells.
Term
Conditions/diseases caused by Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC)
Definition
infection causes a syndrome that is identical to Shigellosis, with profuse diarrhea and high fever. EIEC are highly invasive, and they utilize adhesin proteins to bind to and enter intestinal cells. They produce no toxins, but severely damage the intestinal wall through mechanical cell destruction. It is closely related to Shigella.
Term
Conditions/diseases caused by Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) aka Escherichia coli O157:H7
Definition
n enterohemorrhagic strain of the bacterium Escherichia coli and a cause of foodborne illness. Infection often leads to hemorrhagic diarrhea, and occasionally to kidney failure, especially in young children and elderly.
Term
Conditions/diseases caused by Entero-aggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC or EAgEC)
Definition
adhere to the intestinal mucosa and elaborate enterotoxins and cytotoxins, which result in secretory diarrhea and mucosal damage. EAEC's ability to stimulate the release of inflammatory mediators may also play a role in intestinal illness.
