Term
Formation of Glaciers
Definition
-Snow accumulates during the winter -Some snow does not melt during the summer -This is usually on the mountain tops (north facing slopes) -Next winter’s snowfall accumulates on top of last years snow -Snow is compressed into ice -This process continues until the weight of the ice becomes too heavy -The ice slowly moves down hill
Term
Formation of a Corrie
Definition
-After a glacier is formed the glacier moved down hill. -Erosion processes such as plucking, and freez-thaw erode some of the mountain rock steepening the headwall of the corrie -eventually the glacier makes a dip in the rock and settles there. -after the glacier melts away water is left -voila! a corrie is made
Term
Forms of Erosion
Definition
Plucking, Freeze-thaw, Abrasion
Term
Freeze-Thaw
Definition
Water seeps into cracks in the rock and then freezes, when water freezes it expands by 9%, putting the rock under extreme pressure. This is repeated many times, causing the rock to shatter. This is a type of Physical Weathering.
Term
Plucking
Definition
Ice melts, then freezes around a rock and pulls or plucks the rock from the ground as the ice moves.
Term
Abrasion
Definition
Plucked rocks in the base at the bottom of the glacier grind and scrape away the land underneath them when the glacier moves
