Term

Peristalsis of the lower esophagus becomes inadequate causing narrowing of the distal esophagus.

 

Clinical manifestations: dysphagia, sensation of food sticking, regurgitation, complaints of hear burn

 

Diagnosis: barium swallow, manometry

 

Management: Eat slowly w/ fluids, meds that decrease esophageal pressure, dilation via EGD, esophagomyotomy (cuts esophagus sphincter to releive pressure)
