MOA: Interferes w parasites heme detox

(heme --> hemozoin)

- kills only erythrocytic stage of infection

 

Toxicity: hypotension, confusion, pruritus, OD = hypopigmentation of hair

Hx: admin as a tea from cinchon tree

Toxicity: cinchonism- dizziness, tinnitus, headache

hypoglycemia b/c parasite consumes glucose and releases insulin, renal failure

Toxicity: neuropsychiatric - loss of balance, psychosis

Contraind: pts on beta-blockers, hx of epilepsy
