Term
accessory muscles
Definition
muscles of the shoulder girdle and chest wall that (in addition to the intercostal muscles and the diaphragm) are utilized by people with respiratory distress to help the flow of air in and out of the lungs.
Term
afterload
Definition
the force against which a ventricle contracts that is contributed to by the vascular resistance especially of the arteries and by the physical characteristics (as mass and viscosity) of the blood
Term
angina pectoris
Definition
a disease marked by brief paroxysmal attacks of chest pain precipitated by deficient oxygenation of the heart muscles
Term
angina pectoris
Definition
a disease marked by brief paroxysmal attacks of chest pain precipitated by deficient oxygenation of the heart muscles
Term
apnea
Definition
a temporary suspension of breathing
Term
atelectasis
Definition
collapse of the lung or a part of the lung, usually caused by bronchial obstruction
Term
bronchoscopy
Definition
the use of a bronchoscope in the examination or treatment of the bronchi
Term
cardiac output
Definition
The volume of blood pumped per minute by each ventricle of the heart. Cardiac output is equal to the stroke volume (the amount of blood pumped from a ventricle in a single heartbeat) times the heart rate
Term
chest physiotherapy
Definition
term for a group of treatments designed to improve respiratory efficiency, promote expansion of the lungs, strengthen respiratory muscles, and eliminate secretions from the respiratory system
Term
cyanosis
Definition
a bluish-purple discoloration of skin and mucous membranes usually resulting from a deficiency of oxygen in the blood
Term
diaphragnatic breathing
Definition
is the act of breathing done by expanding one's belly and thereby allowing the diaphragm to move down creating more room for the lungs to expand, rather than only through chest wall expansion/ movement of the rib cage.
Term
electrocardiogram
Definition
ECG a tracing of the electric currents that initiate the heartbeat, used to diagnose possible heart disorders
Term
dyspnea
Definition
difficult or labored breathing
Term
hemoptysis
Definition
spitting or coughing up of blood or blood-streaked mucus
Term
hemothorax
Definition
collection of a bloody fluid in the pleural cavity, between the membrane lining the thoracic cage and the membrane covering the lung
Term
hyperventilation
Definition
a condition characterized by abnormally prolonged and rapid breathing, resulting in decreased carbon dioxide levels and increased oxygen levels that produce faintness, tingling of the fingers and toes, and, if continued, alkalosis and loss of consciousness.
Term
hypoventilation
Definition
deficient ventilation of the lungs that results in reduction in the oxygen content or increase in the carbon dioxide content of the blood or both
Term
hypovolemia
Definition
decrease in the volume of the circulating blood
Term
hypoxia
Definition
inadequate oxygenation of the blood.
Term
myocardial infarction (heart attack)
Definition
damage to an area of heart muscle that is deprived of oxygen, usually due to blockage of a diseased coronary artery, typically accompanied by chest pain radiating down one or both arms, the severity of the attack varying with the extent and location of the damage
Term
nebulization
Definition
a device used to administer medication in the form of a mist inhaled into the lungs
Term
orthopnea
Definition
difficult or painful breathing except in an erect sitting or standing position.
Term
oximetry
Definition
the measuring of oxygen saturation of the blood by means of an oximeter.
Term
pneumothorax
Definition
a condition in which air or other gas is present in the pleural cavity and which occurs spontaneously as a result of disease or injury of lung tissue, rupture of air-filled pulmonary cysts, or puncture of the chest wall or is induced as a therapeutic measure to collapse the lung
Term
postural drainage
Definition
Drainage used in bronchiectasis and lung abscess. The patient's body is positioned so that the trachea is inclined downward and below the affected chest area [1]. Postural drainage is essential in treating bronchiectasis and patients must receive physiotherapy to learn to tip themselves into a position in which the lobe to be drained is uppermost at least three times daily for up to 30 minutes. The treatment is often used in conjunction with a technique for loosening secretions in the chest cavity called chest percussion.
Term
preload
Definition
the stretched condition of the heart muscle at the end of diastole just before contraction
Term
rales (crackles)
Definition
an abnormal crackling or rattling sound heard upon auscultation of the chest, caused by disease or congestion of the lungs.
Term
rhonci (coarseness)
Definition
the coarse rattling sound somewhat like snoring, usually caused by secretion in bronchial airways
Term
stroke volume
Definition
changes in the amount of blood ejected from the left ventricle into the aorta with each heartbeat.

Cardiac Output x Heart Rate= Stroke Volume
Term
thoracentesis
Definition
surgical puncture of the pleural cavity using a hollow needle, in order to withdraw fluid, drain blood, etc

aspiration of fluid from the chest (as in empyema)
Term
wheezing
Definition
a sibilant whistling sound caused by difficult or obstructed respiration
Term
what is the path of blood through the heart and lungs?
Definition
superior vena cava-->inferior vena cava-->right atrium-->tricuspid valve-->right ventricle-->pulmonary arteries-->lungs-->pulmonary veins-->left atrium--> mitral (bicsupid) valve --->left ventricle-->arotic semilunar valve-->aorta-->body tissues
