Term
1.) Explain the importance of culturally relevant care in psychiatric mental health nursing practice.
Definition
It is important to provide culturally relevant care in order to achieve health and well-being. Culture plays a huge roll in a patients health and if it is ignored, the patient will not be able to fully heal and reach well-being.
Term
2.) Discuss potential problems in applying Western psychological theory to patients of other cultures.
Definition
Since Western psychology focuses on the individual, a person of Eastern tradition may not understand some Western practices, including those involved in health care. In Western tradition, we promote HIPPA and patient privacy. We share private information only with the actual patient. Some Eastern families might not understand why they are not allowed access to privileged patient information, because they see the patient health as a family or community issue.
Term
3.) Compare and contrast Western nursing beliefs, values, and practices with those of patients from diverse cultures.
Definition
In Western nursing belief we treat the mind and body as two separate things. When you come into the hospital with a broken arm, no priority is put on spiritual well-being. The arm is treated and then the patient leaves. In Eastern tradition, there is a deep connection between mind and body and healing can only occur when both are treated and are in sync. If a patient has a broken arm in Eastern culture, the family may want a spiritual person, such as a shaman, to come in and promote physical healing through spiritual well-being.
Term
4.) Perform culturally sensitive assessments that include risk factors and barriers to quality mental health care that culturally diverse patients frequently encounter.
Definition
The nurse should pay attention to these specific areas to perform a culturally sensitive assessment.
-Ethnicity, religious affiliation, and degree of acculturation to Western medical culture
-Spiritual practices that are important to preserving or regaining health
-Degree of proficiency in speaking and reading English
-Dietary patters, including foods prescribed for sick people
-Attitudes about and experience with Western medications
-Cultural remedies such as healers, herbs, and practices the patient may find helpful
-Whom the patient considers family, who should receive health information, and how decisions are made in the family
-Cultural customs the patient feels are essential to preserve and is fearful will be violated in the mental health setting
Term
5.) Develop culturally appropriate nursing care plans for patients of diverse cultures.
Definition
Culturally sensitive nursing interventions
-Ensure that the patient understands all care procedures; call a translator if necessary.
-Ensure that all culturally specific needs, such as diet, prayer, and other customs are met to promote client healing.
-Determine barriers to health such as language, or gender barrier that may impede healing and well-being of the patient.
