What are the problems with Feline AD?
Definition

Same lesions

different aetiology

Term
Clinical features of feline HD?
Definition

pruritic

one or more typical reaction pattern: head and neck excoriation, symmetrical self induced alopecia, miliary dermatitis or EGC

- also pododermatitis , facial erythema

Term
How might you note if a cat has self induced alopecia?
Definition

- vomiting fur balls

- hair in faeces

- hair around teeth and tongue

- trichograms- anagen hairs, broken tips

- clumps of hair in environment

Term
Suspecting miliary dermatitis
Definition

papules and crusting lesions either at:

- dorsal lumbosacral area

- caudiomedial thighs

- ventral abdomen

- flanks and necks

Most commonly assoc. with flea allergic dermatitis

Definition

Indolent Ulcer

erythematous, non healing ulcers of the lips, nasal planum, tongue and hard palate.

Term
What cell type are common in feline inflammatory skin diseases?
Definition
Eosinophils
Term
What can an increase in Eosinophils cause at the site of skin inflammation?
Definition
leads to collagen necrosis and granuloma formation
Term
What are your main differential diagnoses?
Definition

Allergic: FAD, atopic derm, adverse food reaction

Mosquito bite hypersensit.

Infectious: pyoderma, malassezia, dermatophytosis

Behavioural: stress, anxiety

Parasitic: cheyletiella, lice, trombicula, otodectes, demodex, sarcoptes

Misc: hypereosinophilic syndrome, mastocytois, familial

Term

Feline ulcerative dermatitis

describe?

where find it?

causes?

how to ddx?

Definition

-well defined, pruritic, ulcerative and crusting lesions

-dorsal neck and shoulders

- might be from injection site reaction or persistent antigen

- diagnose by clinical signs and biopsy

Treatment: preventing self trauma with collars or bandages, avoiding injections and spot on treatments, surgical excision

Term

Definition

Feline cowpox

- dont treat with steroids- may develop systsemic disease with pulmonary lesions and vasculitis.

Term

Definition
Respiratory virus
Term

Paraneoplastic skin disease?

age?

appearance?

assoc with?

prognosis?

Definition

cats look shiny and smooth skin

old cats

assoc. with carcinoma- pancrease, bile duct

- usually fatal

Term

Mural folliculitis

what is it?

underlying diseases?

Definition

Generalise alopecia and scaling

often idiopathic

underlying disease: epitheliotrohpic lymphoma, sebaceous adenitis, paraneoplastic, dermatophytosis, demodex

Might spontaneously resolve

Term

Exfoliative dermatitis

assoc. with?

clin signs?

Definition

paraneoplasitc syndrome assoc with thymoma

generalised erythema

malassezia and or pyoderma

anorexia and malaise

coughing and dyspnoea

Term
If you see papules, nodules and ulcers, what should you be thinking?
Definition

cryptococcus

mycobacteria

fungal infections

Term

Malassezia

assoc with?

Definition

less common than in dogs

usually assoc with?-> keratinisation disorders, paraneoplastic syndromes, metabolic disease

Term

Definition
Malassezia!
Term

Oro-facial pain syndrome

which cats?

appearance?

potent. cause?

treat?

Definition

-burmese and related cats

- violent/frenzied self trauma of face and neck

- herpes virus?

- no respsonse to anti inflamm, good respsonse to phenobarbitone and benziodiazepines

Term

Behavioural triggers to dermatological problems

and treatment

Definition

oriental breeds

nervous or shy

territorial comp.

home environment changes, add member, lose member

Treatment: Behaviour therapy +/- modd modifying drugs, feliway ( feline pheromones)

Term
Diagnosis chart
Definition

Term
Flea allergen test
Definition

main allergen is a flea salivary protein- more sensitive than whole body extracts

- variable sensitivity and specificity for FAD- levels DO NOT CORRELATE TO clinical severity

- doing a live flea challenge most sensitive and specific.

Might do a trial treatment

0: prednisolone 5-7 days, environment control, spot on

2 wk: spot on

4 wk: spot on

6 wk: spot on

Term
Demodicosis
Definition

uncommon

3 species: demodex cati, demodex feli,

demodex gatoi ( short abdomen, stratum corneum, pruritic and contagious)

Term
Treatment for cutanous adverse food reaction
Definition

6-8 week diet trial: novel protein- home cooked, commercial, hydrolysed diet, challenge if good response

Term
What are the considerations when doing a food trial in cats?
Definition

1. selective feeders

2. wont eat carbs

3. cant starve cats- hepatic lipidosis

4. outdoor cats-access to other food

5. must supplement EFAs and taurine in long term home cooked diets.

Term
Allergy testing in cats
Definition

IDTS difficult to perform

poor correlation to clinical diagnosis

Avacta IgE specific serology ( D.farinae specific IgE increased in feline HD

Term
Common presentations in cats with skin problems
Definition

Allergic and parasitic skin diseases

- self induced alopecia

- head and neck pruritus

- Eosinophilic skin disease: miliary dermatitis, eosinophilic plaques, eosinophilic granuloma and indolent ulcer
