Title: School of Athens

-large true fresco painting, 1509-1511

-located in the Stanza della Segnatura, Vatican Palace, Rome

-Raphael painted it for Pope Julius II. Painted four walls for each subject the pope had to be educated in.

-Classicalism- refers to art, the tradition, and the legacy of ancient Greece or Rome

-the painting epitomizes the renaissance ideals of realism and linear perspective, as well as classicalism.

Title: The Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel

-a very large fresco painting on a barrel vaulted ceiling

-took Michaelangelo 4 years to plan and paint, 1508-1512

-commissioned by Pope Julius II

-Michaelangelo was origanally commissioned to make the tomb for Pope Julius II.

-he only agreed to paint the ceiling if he could finish the tomb, but the pope lied.

-the subject was the human body in classical form, from creation stories of the Old Testament.

-Ignudi: nude youthful classical figures

-a moderatede sized oil painting on oak panel, 1434

-used the "Flemish method of glazing"

-Oil Paint- made by combining powdered pigment with linseed oil then grinding them into a smooth paste.

-oil paint came in frequent use during the 1400's in Flanders when artists wanted to realistically depict nature in their paintings.

-historians believe painting is wedding that van Eyck and one other person witnessed

-Seurat made at least 57 preliminary studies for his painting

-he was obsessed with theory and method
