Term
superior oblique action
Definition
intorts the eye ,- brings it in and depresses it .
Term
inferior oblique action
Definition
extorts the eye
Term
saccadess
Definition
rapid ballistic , used udring readign or movign teh gaze , volutnaryand reflexive
Term
smooth puruist
Definition
slwo trackgn movemetns made voluntaryily and requiing atarget
Term
supraduction
Definition
elevation fo the eyes
Term
binocular reflexes
Definition
conjugate right gaze, left gaze, convergance, divveragance
Term
lateral rectus innervation
Definition
abducens (abducts)
Term
medial rectus innervation
Definition
oculomotor nerve
Term
superior rectus innervation
Definition
oculomotor nerve
Term
inferior rectus innervation
Definition
ocullomotor
Term
inferior oblique innervation
Definition
occulomtoor
Term
superior oblique innervation
Definition
tochlearne rve (like a pulley)
Term
exotropia
Definition
lateral deviaiton of eye
Term
esotropia
Definition
medial deviation of the eye
Term
hypertropia
Definition
oen eye is hgiher htan the other
Term
levator palpebrae superiois
Definition
innervated by the occulomotor nerve , keeps eyelids from drooping
Term
superior tarsus muscleex
Definition
ending of the levator palabari superiorus, innervated by sympathetics. responsible for keeping eyelid open
Term
occulomotor nerve innervation types
Definition
GSE- goes to extraoccualr muscles and levator plabrae

GVE- edegar westefeld nucleus, to the pupillary constrictor and ciliary msucle of hte lens (pregnagoinic parasymptehtic
Term
occulomtoor nerve lesion e ffect
Definition
exotropia- down and out, diplopia double vision, mydriasis, ptosis, lack of ccomodation (lens wont chagne shape), all ipsilateral
Term
cilliary msucle function
Definition
is conencted so suspensory ligaments. WHen ciliary msucle is relaxed, ahve tension on suspensory ligament and tehe lense is puleld flat. when cilliayr msuclei s contracted, suspensory lgiaments are relaxed, rsulting in roudner, thicker lense for viewing close objects
Term
occulomotor anuerysm
Definition
comorpsses ocullotmor , can e from superior cerebellar artery ,psoteriowr cerebral artery, itnernal carotid and psoterior communciating artery
Term
uncal herniation cause
Definition
supratentorial mass , causing uncus to herniate through tentoriial cerebellum
Term
uncl herniatino efects
Definition
on midbrain- coma , carnial nerve three (blown pupil), and contralateral hemiplegia - due to cerebral peduncles.
Term
cn iv palsy
Definition
hypertropia and extorsion- head tilt and chin tuck away from the affected eye wil lcorrect the problem.

cn nerve iv - ispilateral sysmtpoms

cn nucleus iv- contralteral
Term
abducens nulceus functiosn and palsy
Definition
innervate teh lateral rectus muscle. Any deficit will result in esotropia
Term
MLF function
Definition
pathway connecting vestibular nuclei to CN III, iv and VI. Originates in vestibualr nuclei ,and contains tectospinal fibers
Term
vestibuloccular pathway
Definition
start with vestibular input goign into vestibular nucei via semiciruclar cnal. projeciton to contralateral VI, causing the contralateral eye to abduct , this abducens nucleus utilized the mlf pathway to excit eth ocoulmotor nucleus and crosses over here, causing excitation of the occulomotor nuclues ipsilateral to the firred veistbular nulceus. This results in the eye moving medially.
Term
oculocephalic reflex : dolls eye
Definition
check for this in patient with coma .VOR shoudl still fucniton, if it doesnt work, means that there is problem in the VOR pa thway.
Term
optkientic nystagmus
Definition
is ok and normal
Term
vestibular nystagmus
Definition
when being spun- endolymph movesi n direciton of s pin, so VOr goes to oppostie sdie which means the saccade goes to tehsame side. WHen we s top, the endolymph starts moving to the oposite side but stays there , whih leads to nsytagmus to the same side s rotation
Term
caloric testing
Definition
used if suspect tumor or interuption to vestibulocohcelar reflex, as enabls seperate testing of each system. can be usedi n coma- however the quick saccade onlyo ccurs in conscious patients
Term
mlf lesion
Definition
occulomtoor cant respond so the medially moving eye to VOR cant operate.
Term
braisntem lesion effect on vor
Definition
neither eye will move
Term
vertgo
Definition
sensation of turningn or rotating in space in absence of rotaton
Term
vertigo
Definition
debris from otolithic membrane in ampulla , lesions in cn VIII , or vestibular nuclei, infection of vestibular labrynth ,meniers disease ,brainstem/cerebelalr lesions
Term
Paramaedian pontine reticular formaiton
Definition
goes up to adjacent nuclei baducens nuclei and goges to lateral rectus from there. THen fromteh abducens goes via mlf to the cotnralater oculomotorn ulceus
Term
vertical gaze nucleus
Definition
rostral interstitial nucleus
Term
oblique eye movements nucleus
Definition
ombinatino of pprf and Rostral itnerstitial nuclus
Term
horizontal saccades pathway
Definition
starts in the frontal eye fields and projects down to the contralateral PPRF adn the ispilateral sueprior colliculus. WHen FEF is damged we get inability to make saccades to the opposite side, and eye drifting to the same side of the lesion. Permanent inability to make voluntary eye mogv ements not triggered by stimulus.
Term
look at lesions to eye nerves (slide 34 in eye mvoemetns lecture)
Definition
slide 34
Term
are of cortex contorlling smooth pursuit movements
Definition
ipsilateral parietooccipitaltemproal area dn the visual cortex
