The first permanent English settlement in the New World. It was founded by a joint stock company. It struggled at first because people spent their time looking for gold instead of building the colony.

English Protestants who wanted to "purify" (make clean) the Anglican church. They went to America for religious freedom. They mostly settled in New England.

A religious group that challenged the Massachusettes commonwealth. They were a peaceful group who believed in treating the Indians fairly; this caused many of them to be killed. Eventually William Penn joined them and they settled in Pennsylvania.
