Term
Stromalites
Definition
Fossilized mats similar to layered microbial mats that certain groups of prokaryotes still form today in salt marshes and warm lagoons
Term
Hydrothermal Vents
Definition
Hot volcanic outlets in the deep sea floor
Term
Cyanobacteria
Definition
The only photosynthetic prokaryotes that generate oxygen
Term
Endosymbionts
Definition
Symbiotic cells living within larger host cells
Term
Snowball Earth Hypothesis
Definition
Severe ice age from 750-570mya
Term
Spontaneous Generation
Definition
Idea of life emerging from inanimate materials
Term
Biogenesis
Definition
All life arises ONLY from the reproduction of pre-existing life
Term
Ribozymes
Definition
RNA catalysts that remove introns from RNA
Term
Protobionts
Definition
Aggregates of abiotically produced molecules
Term
Three-Domain System
Definition
Three superkingdoms (Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya. No monera
Term
Five-Kingdom System
Definition
Made in 1969 by Robert Whittaker at Cornell University. Plantae, fungi, animalia, protista, monera. Prokaryotes in Monera
Term
Thomas Cech
Definition
(1980) Discovered that RNA is important in modern cells. Disproved theory that only proteins are catalysts
Term
Miller-Urey Experiment
Definition
(1953) Stanley Miller and Harold Urey tested Oparin-Haldane's hypothesis by creating comparable conditions for early Earth. Atmosphere was made up of Methane and Ammonia. Yielded abiotic synthesis of organic compounds. No doubt that early atmosphere had significant role in chemical reactions
Term
Oparin-Haldane Experiment
Definition
(1920's) Al Oparin and JBS Haldane postulated that conditions on early Earth favored chemical reactions that synthesized organic compounds present in the early atmosphere and seas. Cannot happen today because the atmosphere is rich in oxygen produced by photosynthetic life.
Term
Pasteur
Definition
(1862)Overturned spontaneous generation theory. Used nutrient broth . Sterile broth=no growth. Microorganisms made growth on plate. Supports life from life thesis, or biogenesis.
Term
Origin of Life Steps (1)
Definition
1. The abiotic(non-living) synthesis or small organic molecules, such as amino acids and nucleotides
Term
Origin of Life Steps (2)
Definition
The joining of these small monomers into polymers, including proteins and amino acids.
Term
Origin of Life Steps (3)
Definition
The origin of self-replicating molecules that eventually made inheritance possible
Term
Origin of Life Steps (4)
Definition
The packaging of all these molecules into "protobionts" (droplets with membranes that maintaned an internal chemistry different from the surroundings)
