Give a breif synopsis of the works of the following Scientists: Aristole, Jean Baptiste Lamarke, Thomas Mathus, and Charles Darwin.
Definition
Aristotle: described that life arranged in a hierarchy from more primative to more advanced.  Belived life's origins came from non living organisms put together.
Jean B. Lamarke: Belived in the "Inheritance of aquired Characteristics " meaning changes occur during life based on used or disused parts and can be passed down.
T. Mathus: proposed that pop. reproduce geometrically but resulting numbers of individuals tend to be stabile.  Many young are killed and there is a struggle for power.
Charles Darwin: Synthesized theory of natural selection based on these ideas:
more organism are born than will survive, individuals with certain traits better to survive, enormous spans of time are avilable for slow gradual change.
Term
Explain the Parental Investment Theory.
Definition
States that the sex which invest more, become a limited source to the sex that invest less.
i.e. Female lions are competed for by the males
-females provide long caring process to nurture the cub.
Term
What are the "roles" of female and male in the animal kingdom?
Definition
Males:To leave as many offspring as they can so that there traits will be passed on. Pretty much do anything to get laid.

Females: To leave as many offspring as they can but the female are extremely picky.  They want to reproduce with a male they feel has the right traits that will allow there cubs to grow strong and such.
Term
Explain the "Selfish Gene".
Definition
The selfish gene is when the male organism want to have his genes past on rather than take on the genes of someone elses child.

i.e. an adult male lion will actually kill another cub that belong to another male if he is trying to get with a female that already has a cub.
Term
What is Monogamy, Polygamy, Polygyny, and Polyandry.
Definition
Monogamy: One male and one female. Allows for the maximum care for a cub and results in a more successful production of an offspring.
Polygamy: One sex with many partners of the opposite sex for the maximum number of offspring.
Polygyny: One male with many females. The female feels safer in groups and can actually gets
Polyandry: One female with many males. In this scenario, the female courts the male and the male is usually the one that takes care of the young.
Term
What is promiscuity? Explain Kin Selection?
Definition
Random mating amoung a social group and the group as a whole takes care of the child.
i.e. chimpanzee's exhibit this behavior.

-sacrificing oneself for another relative in the group.
By doing this, they keep the gene pool alive.
Term
What are female looking for in males dealing with reproduction?
Definition

-solicitous behavior: persistence,  Constantly bringing food and checking up

-Bright colors, impressive courtship displays, Intricate songs and calls

-Quality of Territory and Resources

-Size and strength of the male

Term
Define Evolution
Definition
The change in gene frequency within a population, demonstrated in genotypes and phenotypes.
Term
What are some examples that demonstrate Evolution?
Definition
-Fossil record: the proof of evolution.
-Comparative Embryology: the ebryology development of an organism may demonstrate evo. history.
-Artificial selection: true breed vs.  mixing of animals.
