The MD5 hash also known as checksum for a file is a 128-bit value, something like a fingerprint of the file. MD5 hash values share the following properties:
- Hash length (128 or 160 bits)
- Non-discoverability (non-identical files translate into different hash value)
- Repeatability (file hashed with same algorithm will always produce the same hash value)
- Irreversibility (one-way → can’t get password if you have the hash value)
