Term
What is a vector
Definition
A vector is an insect or any living carrier that transports an infectious agent from an infected individual or its wastes to a susceptible individual or its food or immediate surroundings.
Term
What are the five rodent characteristics that we must understand to create intervention programs?
Definition
• Daily life patterns rarely change
• Use regular paths and runways
• Live close to their food source and travel to it with the least amount of exposure as possible
• Have avoidance instinct to new objects (avoid changes to survive)
• Physical versatility (e.g., climbing, jumping, swimming, reaching)
Term
What are the five basic forms of rodent interventions?
Definition
• Poisoning (anticoagulants),
• Trapping
• keep food/pet food 12” above ground
• 12” from walls
Term
What are the three methods of controlling mosquito larvae? Know an example for each.
Definition
• Chemical (DDT)
• Biological control (sterile males, insect growth regulator)
• Mechanical (window screens, empty standing H20 containers)
Term
Define emerging zoonoses. What are the three major factors associated with the rise of emerging zoonoses today?
Definition
Emerging zoonoses refers to zoonotic diseases that are caused by either apparently new agents or by known agents that occur in locales or species that previously did not appear to be affected by these known agents.
• Ecological changes that result from agricultural practices
• Changes in population
• Human behavior ( wars, migration, and urbanization)
Term
What are the four major values of performing fly surveys in public health?
Definition
• Determine areas with greatest concentrations
• Determine species of flies present
• Allows choice of specific controls
• Determine potential spread of disease
Term
What are the four impacts that the physical environment of housing may have on human health?
Definition
• Conducive to disease
• Behavioral problems
• Accidents
• Social problems
Term
Why is indoor air quality an important aspect of human health? What are the three factors that affect the degree associated with indoor air exposures?
Definition
Indoor air quality is an important aspect of human health because 90% of our time is spent indoors.
• How well buildings are ventilated
• Type, mixture, and amount of pollutants present
• Improperly designed and operated ventilation systems add to exposure and subsequent risk.
Term
Why do institutional environments present potential hazards to those working, living or admitted to them? Be able to name and briefly describe five of the common problems associated with institutional environments.
Definition
Institutional environments present potential hazards for those working living or admitted into them because they are small communities that have frequent opportunities for the spread of disease.
• Highly stressed/overworked employees.
• At risk individuals for infection due to weakened biological systems.
• Frequent opportunity for disease transmission
• Invasive procedures on the body
• There is also the problems involving common air, waste and food handling, hazardous chemicals and equipment sharps, and blood borne pathogens.
Term
What are the three major health concerns associated with tanning salons, tattoo parlors, or cosmetology salons?
Definition
• Exposure to chemicals
• UV radiation
• Disease from unsterilized instruments
Term
Be able to name and discuss at least five of the opportunities for potential injury at these facilities.
Definition
• UV=cancer
• needles @ tattoo=HIV/Hep. A.
• Lice at hair salon
• Infection from tattoo
• Spray sterilizers are dangerous chemicals
