Cards

Term
Hormones of the Hypothalamus
Definition

Corticotropin Releasing Hormone (CRH)

Thyrotropin Releasing Hormone (TRH)

Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH)

Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone (GHRH)

Somatostatin

Dopamine

Term
Growth Hormone (GH)
Definition

Type: Peptide

Effect: Stimulation of linear growth (esp. during puberty)

Stimulated by: GHRH release from hypothalamus

Inhibited by: Somatostatin release from hypothalamus; sleep, exercise, stress, fasting, high protein meals

Binds to: GH receptor, prolactin receptor

Actions: Increase in blood glucose

Term
Mechanism of GH Actions
Definition
  1. Stimulates production of IGF1 from liver, which causes a reduction in blood glucose levels
  2. GH causes an increase in blood glucose levels
  3. GH inhibits further GH release by pituitary gland
Term
Mechanism of GHRH Actions
Definition
  1. Actson G-protein coupled receptors on somatotrophs in the anterior pituitory
  2. Causes increase in cAMP
  3. Increase in the release of GH into blood
  4. Increases GH gene transcription
Term
Amino Acid Derivatives
Definition

Derived from tyrosine

Stored in endocrine gland prior to release

Secreted via exocytosis

Term
Steriods
Definition

Derived from cholesterol

Immediately diffuse into bloodstream (not stored)

Term
Colloid
Definition

Contained in the thyroid gland

 Consists of thyroglobulin
