Term
What are the top three most likely pathogens in a bacterial sinusitis, acute bacterial rhinitis, acute otitis media, and a community acquired pneumonia?
Definition
Strep. pneumoniae (20-43%)
H. influenzae (22-35%)
M. catarrhalis (2-10%)
Term
What antibiotic is effective against ordinary Strep. Pneumoniae?

How often is Strep. Pneumoniae drug resistant, and what antibiotic should be used to treat a resistant strain?
Definition
Amoxicillin (a beta-lactam / Penicillin)

Resistant 25% of the time. Augmentin (keeps bacteria from destroying the beta-lactam ring of the amoxicillin)
Term
What antibiotic is effective against ordinary H. influenzae?

How often is H. influenzae drug resistant (produces beta-lactamase), and what antibiotic should be used to treat a resistant strain?
Definition
Amoxicillin

Resistant 30% of the time (due to bacterial beta-lactamase production which affects the beta-lactam ring of the amoxicillin).
Augmentin will destroy resistant strains as well.
Term
What antibiotic is effective against ordinary M. catarrhalis?

How often is M. catarrhalis drug resistant, and what antibiotic should be used to treat a resistant strain?
Definition
Amoxicillin

90% resistance by producing beta-lactamase!

Will certainly have to use augmentin.
