Cards

Term
absolute density
Definition
the number of individuals per unit area or per unit volume
Term
big-bang reproduction
Definition
offspring are produced in one burst rather than in a repeated manner
Term
deme
Definition
a population genetic unit of individuals that breed with one another; a genetic population
Term
emigration
Definition
the movement of individuals our of an area occupied by the population, typically the area of birth or hatching
Term
immigration
Definition
the movement of individuals into an area occupied by a population
Term
intrinsic capacity for increase
Definition
the potential rate of increase of a population that combines the life table and fertility schedule with the speed of development
Term
life table
Definition
the age-specific mortality schedule of a population
Term
mean length of a generation
Definition
the average length of time betweeen the birth of a female and her offspring
Term
reproductive rate
Definition
the average number of offspiring produced per female or reproductive unit
Term
reproductive value
Definition
the contribution an individual female will make to the future population
Term
population
Definition
a group of organisms of the same species occupying a particular space at a particular time
Term
3 ways to asses a population
Definition

1. total population count: the gold standard

2. sampling methods: mark and recapture, can be accurate but messy with low number of recaptures - quadrat sampling in plants and smaller animals

3. relative density: indexes- be careful, not qunatitative numbers (approximate)- not useful

Term
Lincoln/Peterson Index
Definition

                          marked animals       marked animals

second sample (r)     in first sample (a)

                          -------------------  =  -----------------

total count in         total population (p)

second sample (n)

Term
assumptions of mark/recapture
Definition

no emmigration or immigration

no natality or mortality

marks not lost during sampling

marked/unmarked captured randomly

Term
inidces of relative density
Definition

traps       number of artifact

pellets         questionairres

vocalizations           cover

pelts         feeding capacity

catch per unit effort       roadside counts

Term
primary characteristics of of population density
Definition

immigration

emigration

natality

mortality

Term

secondary characteristics

Definition

age compostition

sex ratio

genetic structure

Term
physiological longevity
Definition
maximum length of a life in a species
Term
ecological longevity
Definition

the average longevity in a population

(shortest)

Term
cohort life table
Definition
observed birth to death of a group
Term
static life table
Definition
cross section (age) of a population
Term
unlimited population growth
Definition

dN

        ---- = rN

dt

Term
intrinsic rate of increase
Definition
r
Term
net reproductive rate
Definition
Ro
Term

—Age specific reproduction—measure as the number of

female offspring per female

Definition
bx
Term
how can "r" be altered
Definition

Reduce the age at first reproduction

Increase the number of offspring

Increase longevity
