Definition
A way to distinguish east and west culture.  Creates system of knowledge that is legitimized through writing of scholars. Problem with images-ahistorical.  In video-orientalism described as unchanging, full of happy characters and lovers of history

Shang Dynasty
Definition
1500-1045 BCE. Evidence from acheology. Worshiped one high god- Di and other nature gods.  Ancestor worship. Writing on oracle bones. Bronze objects, silk and jade from this time.

Eastern and Western Zhou dynasty
Definition

Western: 1045-771 BCE. King Wen civilies Zhou people, King Wu solidifies take over of Shang and Duke of Zhou=leader. Adds mandate of heaven to justify take over. 

Eastern Zhou: Divided into 2 section: Spring and Autumn periods(ideal time) and Warring state period.  WSP= many small states. One Hundred schools of thought during this time. Confucianism as a political philosophy.

Silk Roads
Definition
Many roads which connect central Asia to eastern china.  Funan is a major city-seaport and ideal place to stop. culture in funan: indian through religion. trade flourishes during han b/c two anchors at end:Roman and Han. silk, paper, phil, religion and language come through silk roads. Cities: Khotan-major location, Dun-huang-furthest chinese influence to the west. Caves of Dun-huang:oldest archieves in the world.

Definition

starts in northern indian with prince gautama/siddhartha

karma-cause&effect: you were born in a certain class system based on karma in a past life.

enlightenment:nirvana=blowing out, a state free from karma. while living in nirvana-buddhaism, an actual buddha.

4noble truths: Life is suffering, suffering is caused by attachment, it is possible to stop suffering, the way to do that is through the 8fold noble path

brings culture and writing to many places

types of Buddhas: shakyamuni("the buddha") amida(great light) maitreya(buddha of the future) Bodhisattva(on the verge of achieving nirvana) Jizo(protector of travelers and children)

Different types of Buddhism: Esoteric Buddhism(secret elite- 2 groups tendai and shingon) self-reliant buddhism(salvation up to you) pureland(pray to amida for salvation) zen buddhism(meditation)

Confucianism
Definition

Major works: the analects, the doctrine of the mean, the great learning, mencius.

Basic Philosophy: 5 relationships= father/son, ruler/subject, friend/friend, husband/wife, elder/younger brother.

based on legal code informed by these relationships. Very secular/anti-religious.

Themes of confucianism: learning, humaneness (be a benevolent ruler)

Qin Shi Huangdi
Definition

under name of King Ying Zheng, becomes ruler at young age. at 35 becomes leader of united Qin state and renames himself Qin Shi Huangdi-meaning the first divine emporer of Qin. 

Tries to centralize China: standardizes language, weights, units and coins, expands roads and canals, burns books and kills scholars to standardize knowledge.  

Begins the building of the great wall of china. 

Wants to become immortal. Does this by studying daoism and drinking mercury.

206 Bce-220ad. Emporer Gao-started as a commoner, joined band of rebels and overthrew Qin dynasty.

in han dynasty-government policies are initiated by advisors. overall effort to reduce taxes. gov officials have to take tests to get position. focus on getting advising.

Daoism
Definition

means "the way". two philosophers: Laozi and Zhuangzi.

as a philosophy: advocates living according to nature. inculdes heaven and humans. no rituals. advocates private life. shouldn't limit yourself. not humanist-humans do not have special existance. 

desires: most can be filled, bad desires cannot-money power and knowledge. 

believe that rituals and rites are constructs that do not have to be followed.  wu-wei meaning non-action. don't do anything that has an agenda.  ideal leader would have no political position.

Early Korea
Definition

origin myth: bear and tigress living in a cave, ask to be human, bear becomes woman, marries god Hwanung, have boy and first ruler of korea. 

kija-man from china who could have been first ruler, but not likely.  

3 kingdoms period: Goguryeo (largerst, oldest, copy chinese gov) Paekche ( median between chinese and japanese, ally to china, very buddhist, chinese pick rulers) Silla (smallest, jealous of paekche and chinese relationship)

Chinese defeat Goguryeo. Silla and Paekche start fighting seperately, Silla defeats Paekche, moves into Goguryeo and runs Chinese out. Rules the first unified Korea.
