Term
Polycythemia (also known as polycythaemia or erythrocytosis)
Definition
a disease state in which the proportion of blood volume that is occupied by red blood cells increases. Blood volume proportions can be measured as hematocrit level.
Term
Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), now known as Anaphylactoid syndrome
Definition
a rare and incompletely understood obstetric emergency in which amniotic fluid, fetal cells, hair, or other debris enters the mother's blood stream via the placental bed of the uterus and trigger an allergic reaction. This reaction then results in cardiorespiratory (heart and lung) collapse and coagulopathy.
Term
Hyperreflexia
Definition
defined as overactive or overresponsive reflexes. Examples of this can include twitching or spastic tendencies, which are indicative of upper motor neuron disease as well as the lessening or loss of control ordinarily exerted by higher brain centers of lower neural pathways (disinhibition)
Term
puerperium (pu·er·pe·ri·um)
Definition
1. The state of a woman during childbirth or immediately thereafter.
2. The approximate six-week period lasting from childbirth to the return of normal uterine size.
Term
atelectasis
Definition
obstruction (blockage) of the airways that affects tiny air sacs called alveoli. Alveoli are very thin-walled and contain a rich blood supply. They are important for lung function, since their purpose is the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. When the airways are blocked by a mucous "plug," foreign object, or tumor, the alveoli are unable to fill with air and collapse of lung tissue can occur in the affected area. Atelectasis is a potential complication following surgery, especially in individuals who have undergone chest or abdominal operations resulting in associated abdominal or chest pain during breathing. Congenital (insert term here) can result from a failure of the lungs to expand at birth. This congenital condition may be localized or may affect all of both lungs.
Term
leukocytosis
Definition
a condition characterized by an elevated number of white cells in the blood. The normal range is 5,000 to 10,000 white cells per cubic millimeter of blood.
Certain medications, including corticosteroids, chemotherapy drugs, lithium and beta agonists, may cause (TERM).
Term
Thalassemia
Definition
a blood disorder passed down through families (inherited) in which the body makes an abnormal form of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. The disorder results in excessive destruction of red blood cells, which leads to anemia.
The most severe form of alpha (TERM) major causes stillbirth (death of the unborn baby during birth or the late stages of pregnancy).

Children born with (TERM) major (Cooley's anemia) are normal at birth, but develop severe anemia during the first year of life.
Term
Preeclampsia
Definition
pregnancy-specific condition in which hypertension and proteinuria develop after 20 weeks of gestation in a previously normotensive woman.
