After Joseph's death Rigdon argued that there could be no successor to the deceased prophet and that he should be made the "Protector" of the church. Rigdon solidified and led an independent faction of Latter Day Saints who separated themselves from the main body of the church when Brigham Young was sustained. He claimed it was the rightful continuation of the church founded by Smith. |

Their dress and manners resembled in certain respects those of Quakers, and their manner of worship included shaking and physical contortions. The society had its beginning in England during the latter part of the 1700s Ann Lee, founder of the Shakers, immigrated to America with her followers just before 1800, Settling in Ohio, they were in close proximity to the saints. |
