Term

Pfalz

Definition

Called “The Palatinate” in English, Pfalz is the second largest German wine producing region (after Rheinhessen). Located just west of the Rhine and south of Rheinhessen, the southern border of Pfalz looks at the French wine region of Alsace. The Pfalz climate resembles that of Alsace, making it the sunniest and warmest of all Anbaugebiete.

Pfalz has two Bereiche, 25 Grosslagen and 325 Einzellagen.

Term
Fraken
Definition

Known for its traditional squat, round wine flask called the Bocksbeutel, Franken (Franconia in English) forms a wine region along the Main River around the Franconian capital of Würzburg. Vineyards in this large region are found sporadically throughout.

Franken’s soils are mineral-rich, and most Franconian wines are white and dry. Although Müller-Thurgau is the leading grape, Franken has a reputation for producing the best Silvaner in the world. Red grapes account for only 20% of acreage, their leader being Spätburgunder.

Much of Franken’s wine is consumed locally, often under the convivial conditions of a Weinfest, or local wine festival, which occur at various time of the year in nearly every one of the region’s towns.

Franken has 3 Bereiche, 23 Grosslagen, and 216 Einzellagen.

Term
Tafelwein (table wine)
Definition
Germany is one of the only countries in which the category of plain ordinary “table wine” is divided into separate regions instead of covering the entire country. Germany has seven Tafelwein regions; some of these have sub-regions.
