1850s, war between Russia and the allied French, British and Russian (and Sardinia- which joined to aid Italian Unification: granted Austrian land in Italy at the end for helping), first of the modern wars, using railroads and telegraphs, as well as modern weapons and…yeah. Russia was defeated.

The weapons in Russia were much more outdated than those of western Europe. Breech Loading was slow and cumbersome and the dominate method of reloading rifles used by the Russian Army. Percussion cap rifles were better and stronger.
