List and describe the four components of communication?
Definition
1. Source - Originator of the message, single person, group, government.
2. Message - Idea or a feeling the source is communicating.
3. Channel - Sound waves and speaking, could be visual,sign language, outside noise. Inside-daydreaming, pain, stress.
4. Receiver - Person, group, nation, government getting the message. Info comes in and goes through our filters.

Aggressive - On defensive strikes, may cause physical harm.
Passive-Aggressive - Appears in agreement but acts differenly.
Assertive - Works to have their needs as well as others needs met, looks for win/win situation.

Describe - The behavior objectively (never says always).

Explain/Express - How you feel I statements. Specify/Suggest - The behavior you would want.

Consequences - Focus on the positive but do not forget the negative.

Statistically there is a very high number of sexual abuse and a good likelihood you will run into someone and need to know how to deal with it.

Every area, everything is affected. Your self confidence, sexuality, marriage, dating, when you have children, relationships, parenting.

Minimizing - To reduce or keep to a minimum. Rationalizing - To create and excuse for actions. Splitting - Good person-bad person, separating the consciousness from the body.Control, Humor, Isolation/Addiction, Spacing out.

Be aware of when you are over your head and know when to be ready to refer to someone who has more experience.

"Talk with the client first.
Explain the need to refer.
Get permission in writing to refer.
Have the client make appt to show their commitment and accountability.
If you can't get them to do the referral, be willing to Let them go. Discontinue working with them"

What should you do if your client refuses to see another counselor?
Definition
Give the information explaining this is not your area of expertise. Explain new counselor can help them in those areas. At some point you may need to stop working with client.
