Cards

Term

BIOS

(Basic Input/Output System)

Definition

A Collection of Software Codes Built into a PC that Handle some fundemental tasks of sending data from one part to the other

Term

Boot-Up (or Boot)

Definition
A Process that takes place while being turned on. The Computer performs routines necessary to get all components functioning and the operating system loaded.
Term

Circuit Board

Definition

Replaces the need for seperate wiring with metallic traces printed on the board

Traces lead to processors, resistors and capacitors

Term

Clock

Definition

A Microchip that regulates the timing and speed of the computer's function. The chip has a crystal that vibrates at certain frequencies. Shortest length of time is one clock or one vibration.

Speed of clocks or computers is expressed by MHZ

One MHz is 1 Mil vibrations a sec so the bigger the MHZ the faster the computer.

If 300 MHz processor then designed to work with a clock chip of same speed.

Term

CMOS

(Complementary metaloxide Semiconductor)

Definition

a chip that retains crucial info about the hardware even when PC is powered off Due to a Small battery

Which Sits On top of it

Term

CPU

(Central Processing Unit or Microprocessor)

Definition

a Microchip that processes the info and code used by a computer

"brains"

Term

Expansion Slot

Definition

Unused slots which the user can plug hardware add-ons such as graphic cards and sound boards to acclerate the PC performance

Term

motherboard

Definition

sheet of plastic which metallic circuits have been printed and PC components are connected (via sockets, slots and ports)

external ports include USB

Term

Operating System

(OS)

Definition

Software that controls the operations of hardware.  It directs any operation and regulates the use of the hardware among all applications

ex.) XP,Vista, Linux, and Windows

Term

Rom

(Read only memory)

Definition
Memory chips or Data stored on disks that can only be read by the processor. PC cannot write new data.
Term

RAM

(Random Access Memory)

Definition

Memory which can be read and written to.

Term

System Files

Definition
Small files the contain software code which are the first to be read by the computer after the initial boot-up. They load the rest of the operating system
Term

Write

Definition

is the process by which a computer stores data  in RAM or Disk

Term

READ

Definition

Process which a computer transfers data from drive/RAM to Microprocessor
