Term
humidity
Definition

The amount of water vapor in the air.

Term
saturated
Definition
When air contains all the water vapor it can possibly.
Term
condensation
Definition
When water vapor in the air cools and turns into  liquid water.  Condensation creates both clouds and the water that forms on the outside of a glass of cool lemonade on a hot day.
Term
evaporation
Definition

When energy(heat) warms water and changes it into a gas called water vapor.

Term
clouds
Definition
Form when water vapor cools and condenses into very small water droplets or ice crystals. There are several different kinds of clouds.
Term
fog
Definition
A type of cloud that forms close to the ground.
Term
Stratus
Definition

Are low clouds that form in flat, wide layers.  Sometimes they are gray.  Rain or snow may fall from these clouds.

Term
Cumulus
Definition
Form as warm moist air moves high in the sky.  They are often dome shaped, with flat bottoms.  These are usually a sign of good weather.
Term
Cirrus
Definition
Form high in the sky where the temperature is very cold.  They are made of ice crystals.  They move quickly and look whispy and feather-like. They often are a sign that warmer air is on the way.
Term
precipitation
Definition

Moisture that falls from clouds to the ground.

Term
Rain
Definition
Precipitation that falls from clouds when the temperature near the Earth is above freezing.
Term
Snow
Definition

Precipitation that falls from clouds when the temperature near the earth is below freezing.

Term
hailstones
Definition
precipitation that forms as frozen ice droplets but due to strong winds in the clouds rise up instead of down.  As they travel up in the cloud, they grow larger as more ice forms on the them.  They finally fall to the earth when they are too heavy to be carried back up into the cloud.
Term
rain gauge
Definition
An open topped container used to collect rain.  Marks on the side of the rain gauge show how much precipitation has fallen.
Term
hygrometer
Definition
an instrument used to measure the humidity in the air.
