Term
What is the basic process that makes weather?
Definition
every physical process of weather is accompanied by, or is the result of a heat exchange. When various parts of teh earth's surface heat up at different rates. and when one part heats up faster than the other, it creates air ciruclation, and weather changes.
Term
on shore breeze?
Definition
when the coast of a large body of water and the land heats up much faster than the water. as the relatively warmer air over the land rises, it draws the relatively cooler air from the water, creating an on-shore breeze.
Term
off-shore breeze
Definition
when near a large body of water, in the evening when the land starts to cool down, the breeze shifts to an off-shore breeze because at night the land cools off faster than the water and the air sinks over the land
Term
earths atmospher is made up of.....
Definition
78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1 percent various other gases. water vapor is suspended in the air and comprises between 0 and 5% of the air volume
Term
average pressure exerted by the atmospher?
Definition
at sea level is 29.92 inches of mercury
Term
5 major levels of the atmosphere
Definition
1. troposphere 2. tropopause 3. stratosphere 4. mesophere 5.thermosphere
Term
atmosphere where most flying takes place
Definition
troposphere
Term
troposphere
Definition
where the most flying takes place. also most affected by the uneven heating of the earth's surface, so has the most weather
Term
troposphere thickness or height?
Definition
at the equator extends from 50 and 60 thousand feet. but at the poles only 20 to 30 thousand feet high
Term
jetstream
Definition
a narrow band of high speed wind from 50-150 knots that meanders in and around the tropopause.
Term
Isobars
Definition
lines of equal pressure. when they are close together the pressure gradient or rate of change is more dramatic and the winds will be stronger.
when moving to high, they more in clockwise. moving to low they move counter clockwise
Term
why winds travel parallel to the isobars and not directly from high to low?
Definition
a force called coriolis.
Term
coriolis affect
Definition
Term
sublimation
Definition
when water moves from the frozen state(ice or snow) directly to the vapor state without melting
Term
calculate cloud heights
Definition
temperature- dew point coverage. then divide that by 4.4 and multiply by 1000.
Term
cumulus clouds
Definition
clouds that form because of rising air. which means accumulation or heap. characterized by their billowy, puff appearances
Term
stratus clouds
Definition
clouds that form by cooling, stratus means stratified or layered. they are characterized by their flat, layered appearance.
Term
high clouds
Definition
between 16,500 and 45,000. called cirriform clouds. include cirrus, cirrocumulus, and cirrostratus clouds.
Term
middle clouds
Definition
exist from 6,500 to 23,000. usually but not always prefixed with "alto" like altostratus or altocumulus but nimbostratus is another mid level cloud type.
Term
low clouds
Definition
extends from surface to 6,500. include stratus, stratocumulus and fair weather cumulus clouds
