Term

Definition
market share was decreasing and in a saturated market and found 2 ways to regain: steal customers or create new products --must look at BI to understand consumer behavior - try to find new market -- low carb craze and healthier purchasing habits
Term
ETL: extract, transform, and load
Definition

take info from firm and converting it to some standardized format; data is coming from all different directions; put this data into big warehouse

Term
on-demand business intelligence
Definition

outsource your bi needs to another over the internet; don't have to house and maintain the software yourself; shift data to be housed somewhere else (reason why some companies dont choose bi on demand)

Term
BI=
Definition

way to generate new info by searching databases; forecasting and looking to the future; filter the info and find the right combinations ; ex: restaurants use effectively bc operations-based

Term
drilling down
Definition

use technology to find the problem (restaurant example)

Term
Predictive Analytics:
Definition

: to increase customer loyalty and satisfaction; improve growth strategies; discover process inefficiencies; identify and respond to adverse situations before they affect performance; optimize resource allocations; BI

Term
OLAP: Online Analytic Processing
Definition

-querrying data on speed --ask much more complex kinds of queries

-drill down by filtering data set and keep adding dimensions till get to sufficient amount of data

-looking at data with many dimensions (3+)--and can see trends over time

      -data table like a cube

Ex: look at total sales and drill down by region, to city, by indy stores and pinpointed specific store where sales had gone down (Ruby tuesday) --OLAP helps them identify it

Term
Data Mining
Definition

: a lot of data and try to find one interesting

-dont ask a specific query like in OLAP, sino cuales productos venden bien, y if they sell well then data mining might specify a category to look at --software finds a relationship for you..you dont ask a specific question

-ex: direct marketing, trend analysis --looking at patterns

-let software find the patterns for you --ex: find a product whose demand varies by region, which region has most valuable customers? which products sell well together? (diapers and beer)

Term
Text mining
Definition

looking at unstructured data; use ETL --and format it so can do BI on it

-try to find unexpected patterns ex: posts on social networks

Term
DSS
Definition

most general; any info system that provides support for quantitative decisions; must have some type of quantitative/mathematical model  to support the design phase; helps you make final decision

Term
ESS
Definition

exec support system; precursor to BI as we know it; support sytem that is directed at execs; quick pulse of whats going on at highest level of org

Term
GDSS:
Definition
group support system; for consensus building --which product should we move forward with first
Term
Knowledge systems
Definition

captures meta info about who knows what --what's in your head and cant really put into system

Term
Automated Decision Support
Definition

set of tools that you can implement into DSS, ESS or GDSS --further enhances the decision making support in an automated system

Term
Performance mngmt
Definition

dashboards --gives easy access, big picture info

Term

What was the role of networking (or lack thereof) in the Dec. 25, 2009 attempted bombing of a US airliner?

Definition

needed to share info through intranet

Term
Networks

the most secure way/highest quality to send data

Term
interoperability
Definition
devices can interface with each other
Term
Protocol/standard:
Definition
: generally understood pattern of behavior
Term
Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol:
Definition

standard by which internet works (ex: hypertext tranfer protocol - http) --file transfer protocol (when attach a document to an email)

-TCP piece makes sure packets get reassembled in correct order

-IP makes sure packets get routed in the most efficient way

Term
Circuit network:
Definition

the route of transmission is used and held throughout transmission (ex: call waiting --no one else can use line)

Term
Packet networks
Definition

do not have dedicated lines. every transmission gets divided into packets and each packet gets routed along network in most efficient manner; much more efficient

Term
Converged network
Definition
enable a network to carry multiple types of content (data,  voice, video all on single network) --must for efficient and cost effective to manage because 1 network instead of bunch of separate networks ex: phone (phone service, internet access etc)
Term
Broadband
Definition

high capacity ..allows a lot of info from different sources/streams being transferred at same time

Term
personal area network:
Definition

devices that connect around you as an individual (printer connected toy your comp, iPod syncing to computer)

Term
VPM: virtual private network:
Definition

uses public lines but transmits secure data; typical way bus partners send info ; based on access

Term
Extranet
Definition
free to all in the internet but info can be shared outside the organization
Term

Web 3.0
Definition

connect information in an autonomous fashion --the semantics web

-idea is for the computer/internet to gain some knowledge when conducting your search -- searching for holiday and gives offers with it relative to that ; or clothes shopping
