Term
Does acetylation and methylation just activate and silence?
Definition
While that is generally the case, they can do the opposite
Term
what causes the silencing when somehting is methylated?
Definition
it is not the methylation per se that causes the cessation of transcription, rather its what binds to the methylated group that determines its activity
Term
HAT mechanism

Term
How to activate (repress) chromatin for transcription
Definition
  1. covalently modify histone termini: H3 lysine 9 acetylation/methylation
  2. use histone modifications to recruit open proteins
  3. move nucleosomes out of or into the way of the promoter

Term
How do modifyig enzymes create binding sites
Definition

a) histone acetylase (HAT) which causes binding of a second activator protein

b) bromodomain (reconize acetylysine) subunit of TFIID. This is much more attracted to regions that have undergone acetylation.
