Term
Synthetic Division
Definition
Combines two elements together(metal and non-metal) and sometimes two compounds(rare) to form a single compound.

A+B--AB

example: _H2+_O2--_H2O
Term
Decomposition Reaction
Definition
A single compuond breaks down into single elements(mostly) or into an element and a compound. AB--A+B example: _Ti4Cl4--_4Ti+2_Cl2 *Carbonate(CO3)-2)Decomposition always produces CO2
Term
Combustion Reaction
Definition
A hydrocarbon (C H O) Reacts with oxygen and always yields to carbon dioxide and water. CxHx or CxHxOx--_CO2+_H20 example:_C3H8+5_O2--3_CO2+4_H2O
Term
Single Replacement Reaction
Definition
An element reacts with a compound to yield a new compound and the replaced element; the element that replaces the metal/non-metal MUST be more reactive/active than the one it replaces in order for the reaction to take place. Metal Replacement: A+BC--AC+B Non-Metal replacement: A+BC--BA+C example: _Ca+_CuSO4--_CaSO4+_Cu (balanced)
Term
Double Replacement Reactions
Definition
These reactions take place in aqueous solution between two compounds. The formation of the product depends on upon the solubility of the product in the solvent of the solution. If BOTH products are soluable then no reaction occurs. If not then you must put the charges of each compound in the product and balance the equation. AB+CD--CB+AD example: _NH4CL+_Fe(NO3)2--_FeNh4+_NHNO3 (no reaction)
