Term
Methanol
Definition
acts like ethanol in that it intoxicates. causes toxic necrosis of retinal ganglion cells and blindness
Term
Carbon Monoxide

Chronic poisoning- won't see cherry red color. have protracted low level hypoxia
case: person lives in old house and wakes up with headaches
Term
Mercury
Definition
Organic- CNS toxicity
Inorganic- Renal Disease
Term
Cyanide
Definition
Hypoxia of brain, liver, and renal tubules
binds to cytochrome c oxidase and blocks mitochondrial function
Term
Mushroom poisoning
Definition
Amonita Phalloides- common in east coast. Amanita Muscarina- common in west coast.
both cause vomiting, abdominal cramps, CNS injury, liver, kidney necrosis.
A. Phalloides inhibits RNA pol II
Term
Insecticide
Definition
poisoning common in farming community. Its a CNS toxin and can cause delirium.
Term
Antifreeze
Definition
Oxalic Acid. Antifreeze has ethylene glycol which transfers to oxalic acid- this perpetuates with end renal tubule and not only does it block renal tubules, it is also toxic to cells that live in renal tubules
Term
Lye
Definition
Sodium Hydroxide
looks like cup of water, but when drink it, causes direct injury to the esophagus, and the stomach then neutralizes it's effects- DO NOT induce vomiting as it will injure esophagus on way up.
Term
Lead
Definition
In blood- get stippling of RBC, kidney damage, peripheral neuropathy from chronic poisoning.
Children: brain edema, difficulty in school, behavioral problems, **line on epiphysis of growing bones will have Pb deposits
Adults: Microcytic anemia with basophilic stippling due to Zn protoporphoria or from porphoria of RBC**, peripheral nerve demyelination, peripheral neuropathy, severe abdominal pain.
Get Pb poisoning from ghetto areas, batteria, old fridge
Term
Cocaine
Definition
reason people take it is because motor end plate altered so world speeds up. interfere with way chemicals are formed and broken down so that transmission across end plate is much too fast
Can cause MI and cardiac arythmias because of severe vasoconstrictio
