can be defined as brief, every day exchanges that send denigrating messages to a target group, such as people of color; religious minorities; women; people with disabilities; and gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered individuals. Manifested as: verbal, nonverbal, visual or behavioral realm. Usually automatically or unintentionally. P. 153, communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults that potentially have a harmful or unpleasant psychological impact on the target person or group. Made to feel unwelcome, isolated, unsafe, and alienated.

a blatant verbal, nonverbal, or environmental attack intended to convey discriminatory and biased sentiments. Related to overt racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism, and religius discrimination in which indivduals deliberately convey derogatory messages to target groups. (ex: spic, faggot, or kyke; hiring only men for managerial positions; requesting not to sit next to a Muslim on an airplane; and deliberately serving disabled patrons last).

Definition
verbal comments or behaviors that exclude, negate, or dismiss the psychological thoughts, feelings, or experiential reality of the target group. Unintentional and usually outside the perpetrator’s awareness.
When individuals claim that they do not see religion, or color, but instead see only the human being, they are negating the lived experiences of religious and ethnic minorities in the U.S.

Definition
Unintentional behaviors or verbal comments that convey rudeness or insensitivity or demean a person’s racial heritage/ identity, gender identity, religion, ability, or sexual orientation identity. Outside level of conscious awareness, subtle snubs are characterized by an insulting hidden message. [ex: interviewer expressed surprise (nonverbally & verbally) that Michael (Black and Latino) had outstanding credentials on his resume, conveyed a hidden message.

Aversive racism
Definition
manifested in individuals who consciously assert egalitarian values but unconsciously hold antiminority feelings, therefore, aversive racists consciously sympathize with victims of past injustice, support the principles of racial equality, and regard themselves as nonprejudiced. At the same time they possess negative feelings and beliefs about historically disadvantaged groups, which may be unconscious.

Similar to aversive racism- individuals support and actively condone gender equality, yet unknowingly engage in behaviors that contribute to the unequal treatment of women. unequal and unfair treatment of women that is not recognized by many people because it is perceived to be normative, and therefore does not appear unusual. NOT deliberate or conscious.
