In the early 1800s, South Carolina's economy began to deline. many of the state's resident blamed this on the nations tariffs--the taxes the united states charged other countries to bring goods into the country. Because it had few industries, South Carolina purchased many of its manufactured goods from England, but tariffs made them extremely expensive.
