Gianlorenzo Bernini
David
1623
Baroque
This statue made to be seen all around. David looks more like a shepard and not completely naked (shows more prudeness). Reminiscent of the diskobolos. Caught the moment right before action is about to happen. Bag of rocks on his hip. Moves out into the space that surrounds it. Emotion on face to show that he was more emotionally charged that Michelangelo's David. |

Caravaggio
Calling of Saint Matthew
1597-1601
Baroque
Jesus and Peter walk in to a bar. Peter motions to Mathew's body guard to tell him to wait. Jesus is motioning to an astonished Mathew. Here michelangelos reference to the hands is shown. Tenebrism is used to show a dark scene with only a light source barely lighting. This painting was criticized because Jesus and Peter didn't look noble. The clothing on Mathew and company to look like the clothing of the time so that everyone could relate to the scene and that they too can be chosen by Jesus. Christ only has a small distinguishable halo. |
