Term
Explain the relationship between chromosomes, genes, chromatin, and sister chromatids?
Definition
Genes are segments of chromosomes that code for proteins. chromosomes are made of chromatin. sister chromatids are copies of the same chromosome, joined together.
Term
Explain what IPPMAt stands for and state when sister chromatids condense, move to the middle of the cell, and break apart to become independent chromosomes.
Definition
Term
Explain the relationship between MPF and cyclin, cdk, and enzymes that phosphorylate MPF and degrade cyclin.?
Definition
MPF activates proteins that get mitosis under way. MPF consists of cyclin and a CDk, and is inactivated by phosphorylation (at two sites) and activated by dephosphorylation (at one site). enzymes that degrade cyclin reduce MPF levels
Term
How has the death rate due to lung cancer changed over time in males versus females? suggest a hypothesis to xplain this pattern.
Definition
After 1990, the death rate form lung cancer decreased in men but not in women. One hypothesis to explain the data is that rates of cigarette smoking decline in men but increased in women.
Term
Explain why both structures represent a single chromosome then label the sister chromatids in the replicated chromosome.
Definition
Homologous chromosomes are similar in size, shape, and gnu content, and orginate from different parents. Sister chromatifs are exact copies of a chromosome that are generated when chromosme are replaced (s phase of the cell cycle).
Term
Explain how genetic variation would be affected if maternal chromosomes always lined up together on one side of the metaphase plate during meiosis I and paternal chromsomes always lined up on the other side.
