Energy that you can hear.

Definition
Moves quickly back and forth. All sound is made when something vibrates. When the vibration stops, teh sound stops.

Definition

Vibrations that are moving through matter.

 

EX Sound waves travel through the air to your ear and you hear the sound.

 

Sound moves in all directions. EX: When a rooster crows you can hear it in many different directions.

Definition

How loud or soft a sound is.

 

It takes more energy to make a loud sound (scream) than a soft sound (whisper).

PITCH
Definition

How high or low a sound it. The speed of an object's vibration makes its sound's pitch high or low.

 

 

EX: Thicker or longer strings vibrate more slowly and make a sound with a low pitch.

 

Thinner or shorter strings make a sound with a high pitch.

Definition

You hear sound with your ears.

1.Sound vibrations move through the air into your ear.

 

2.They move from your outer ear to your inner ear.

 

3.The vibrations cause the eardrum and the tiny bones in your ear to vibrate.

 

4. The inner ear sends a signal to the brain.

 

You hear a sound.

HOW DOES SOUND TRAVEL THROUGH WATER?
Definition

When a sound hits an object under water, they bounce off the objects. The bounced sounds are called echoes.

 

Sound travels faster through water than air, but it travels fastest through solids.

HOW CAN A SOUND BE HEARD IN A CLASSROOM OR ON THE PLAYGROUND BE HEARD BY EVERYONE?
Definition

Sounds travels through gases, such as air. These vibrations, or sound waves, travel through the air to your ear. Because sound moves in all directions, people all over can hear it.

 

You can block sound. EX: ear plugs or coverering your ears.
