A-Mode

Amplitude Mode

Appears as a series of upward spikes that provide measurements of distance between the probe and reflector

As a sound pulse is emitted by the transducer, a dot moves at a constant speed across the system's dsplay. when an echo returns, an upward deflection proportional to the amplitude of the returning echo is observed

X-axis = reflector depth/pulse's time of flight

Y-axis = amplitude of echo

Used extensively in ophthalmology

B-Mode

Brightness Mode

As a sound pulse is emitted by the transducer, an invisible dot moves at a constant speed across the system's display

Returning echoes are presented as spots on the line of travel. The stronger the returning echo, the brighter the spot

X-axis = reflector depth

Z-axis = amplitude of echos (brightness)

Screen rotates axes to represent the X-axis vertically

Includes real-time imaging in gray scale

An electronic instrument used to measure changing electrical voltage

Displays the waveforms of electric oscillations on a screen

M-Mode

Motion Mode

Lines represent depth of movement of the reflecting body surfaces as it occurs in real time

Related to location

The only mode that displays the changing position of reflectors with respect to time

X-axis = time

Y-axis = reflector depth
