Term
What do the hypothalamus and pituatary gland do?
Definition
They send messages/hormones to all the other endocrine organs. This is also responsible for all motivated behaviors.
Term
What are some of the 4 functions of the endocrine system?
Definition

-Help in reproduction

-maintaining homeostasis/metabolism

-growth and development

-mood and stress response

Term

What does the thyroid gland do?

Definition
-Regulates metabolism by secreting the thyroid hormone.
Term
What are 2 illnesses of the thyroid gland?
Definition

-Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism where one is too much activity of the thyroid gland which makes metabolism too fast (can lose a lot of weight) and where the other one is little activity of the thyroid gland

-Goiter-Lack of iodine in diet. As a result of this, the thyroid gland tries to make it itself, which results in tumor looking goiters.

Term

-What is the function of the pancreas?

-What hormones does the pancreas release? What are these used for?

-What is a condition that can occur with not enough of this hormone?

Definition

-Regulations blood sugar levels

-Insulin and Glucagon.

Insulin is used for giving glucose to cells. Glucagon gives cells more.

-When not enough insulin, you get diabetes because there is too much glucose left behind.

Term
What are the hormones secreted by the gonads (endocrine organ)? What are these used for and secreted by?
Definition

-Testes (the male endocrine organ) secretes the sex hormone, testosterone.

-Ovaries (in women) secrete estrogen and progesterone to allow for the menstrual cycle

-Placenta secretes hormones needed for pregnancy.

Term
What are the hormones secreted by the adrenal glands and what are they used for?
Definition

-Releases adrenaline and corticosteroids (anti-inflammatory hormone)

-Helps with the immune system.

Term
Negative feedback
Definition
Endocrine organs release hormone when receive signal there is not enough for cells. It will send it to the cell and the cells will pick the hormone up with their receptors. Then the organ will receive a signal that a reaction was produced and will stop secreting the hormone.
