Term
What is global warming?
Definition
Increases in average temperatures as a result of the release of increased amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
Rise in sea levels
Global melting of glaciers
Loss of habitat for temperature-sensitive species
More severe storms
Term
global climate change
Definition
some areas in the world are not just warming they are cooling.
Term
the greenhouse effect
Definition
The retention of heat in the atmosphere by carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.
Term
What are the ‘greenhouse’ gases?
Definition
Carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor
Term
heat
Definition
The total amount of energy associated with the movement of atoms and molecules in a substance.
Term
temperature
Definition
A measure of the intensity of heat or kinetic energy.
Term
How is carbon dioxide cycled through living and non-living systems?
Definition
Carbon cycles between living organisms, the atmosphere, bodies of water, and the soil.

Term
Define cellular respiration
Definition
Metabolic reactions occurring in cells that result in the oxidation of macromolecules to produce ATP.
Term
What are examples of fossil fuels?
Definition
Nonrenewable resource consisting of the buried remains of ancient plants that have been transformed by heat and pressure into coal and oil.
ex.-Coal, oil, natural gas, petroleum
Term
7. What evidence is cited by the text for an anthropogenic (human origin) cause behind global warming?
Definition
I think the carbon in the ice not to sure
Term
8. What is cellular respiration? What are the raw materials in and products out associated with cellular respiration?
Definition
Cellular respiration converts energy from food into energy stored in ATP.
ATP consists of adenine, a sugar, and 3 phosphate groups. When a phosphate group is transferred from ATP to another molecule (phosphorylation), energy is transferred and ADP is produced. The energy from ATP can power different kinds of work in the cell.As ATP is used in the cell it must be replenished by cellular respiration.
Food energy adds phosphates to ADP molecules to make ATP.
(Look at chapter summary and powerpoint)
Term
What is ATP?
Definition
nu-cleotide composed of adenine, the sugar ribose, and three phosphate groups that can be hydrolyzed to release energy. Form of energy that cells can use.
Term
ADP
Definition
A nucleotide composed of adenine, a sugar, and two phosphate groups. Produced by the hydrolysis of the terminal phosphate bond of ATP
Term
what role does phosphorylation play in creating ATP from ADP?
Definition
When a phosphate group is transferred from ATP to another molecule (phosphorylation), energy is transferred and ADP is produced.
Term
What three types of cellular work are powered by ATP molecules?
Definition
Mechanical work, Transport work, Chemical work
Term
What is glycolysis?
Definition
The splitting of glucose into pyruvate which helps drive the synthesis of a small amount of ATP. Takes place in the cytosol.
Term
What the Krebs Cycle?
Definition
A chemical cycle occurring in the matrix of the mitochondria that breaks the remains of sugars down to produce carbon dioxide.
Term
What is photosynthesis?
Definition
Process by which plants, along with algae and some bacteria, transform light energy to chemical energy.
Term
stroma
Definition
The semi-fluid matrix inside a chloroplast where the Calvin cycle of photosynthesis occurs.
Term
thylakoids
Definition
Flattened membranous sac located in the chloroplast stroma. Function in photosynthesis.
Term
grana
Definition
Stacks of thylakoids in the chloro-plast.
Term
What is the Calvin Cycle?
Definition
A series of reactions that occur in the stroma of plants during photosynthesis that utilize NADPH and ATP to reduce carbon dioxide and produce sugars.
Term
How does deforestation affect global warming?
Definition
clearing of forests for farming and human settlements
25% of carbon dioxide added to the atmosphere comes from cutting and burning forests in the tropics.
Term
What are some ways in which you can help slow global warming?
Definition
Replanting helps: young trees have faster net photosynthetic rates than older trees.
(Look it up)
Term
What role does the chloroplast play in photosynthesis?
Definition
Occurs in organelles called chloroplasts. (Look at powerpoint for more info)
