Term
ACTIVATED CHARCOAL
Definition
Highly Absorbent carbor, it is obtained by heating granulated charcoal, which drives off gases and makes it "hungry" toget more. used in gas absorption, solvent recovery, deodorization, and as an antidote to certain poisons
Term
ACTUATOR
Definition
A device which is operated by an electrical or vacuum signal. Emission control vacuum solenids, fuel metering solenoids, and idle speed motors are all actuators
Term
ADSORB
Definition
The attraction and holding of gas, vapor, or dissolved matter by the surface of a solid or liquid. The termis usedto describe the function of a charcoal canister
Term
ADVANCE
Definition

Used with referance to ignition timing. Timing is '

"advanced" by adjusting the spark to fire earlier ( in crankcase degrees) in the compression stroke. The opposite of "retard"

Term
AIR / FUEL RATIO
Definition
The proportion (by weight) of air and fuel in a combustible mixture. The ideal ratio for complete combustion of gasoline is approximately  14.7:1
Term
AIR INJECTION
Definition
A process of injecting air into the exhaust manfold behind the exhaust valves. Theextra oxygen allows combustion to finish in the manfold if it did not in the combustion chamber. This systemreducxes HC and CO emissions, and was one of the first emission control approaches used. The air pressure may come from a pump or be generated by exhaust pressure pulses
Term
AIR MANAGEMENT VALVE
Definition
General Motors' name for an electrically and/or vacuum-operated valve which controls air injection diverting, pressure relief, and other air injection switching
