Ashanti was a matrilineal society, but households are polygynous. The senior female of cheifly lineage plays a big role in the selection of the next chief.

Definition
Ashanti did trade slaves, but simply among themselves, not on the market. Slaves were usually prisoners of war, criminals, or people who owed debts. Ashanti, unlike Americans, treated their slaves nicely and humanely, and marriage among and with slaves was common.
