it is the greatest of constantines churches. it stood on the western side of the Tiber River where Constantine and Pope Sylvester believed Peter, the first apostle and founder of the Christian community in Rome was buried. it is capable of housing 3000 to 4000 worshipers at one time. has a wide central nave with flanking aisles and an apse at the end. worshipers entered the basilica through the narthex or vestibule. had an open colonaded courtyard in front of the narthex. it was not adorned with lavish exterior sculptures but inside there were frescos, mosaics, and marble columns. |
